With the advent of powerful smart TVs, the need for streaming boxes isn't quite what it used to be. However, maybe your smart TV's software has become slow or outdated, or you don't own a smart TV at all. In either case, the answer isn't buying a new smart TV; rather, consider a budget streaming stick. The one I like the most is the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which is down to just $35 for Prime Day 2025.

This isn't the lowest price ever for this device, but it's only two dollars above it. The list price is $60, which is too steep for what the Fire TV Stick 4K Max does, in my opinion.

I know some of you are going to say that there's a Fire TV Stick 4K available under $30, but I'd advise against considering that product. While the Fire TV Stick 4K can be great, the biggest disadvantage is that it ships with only 8GB of storage, which makes it borderline unusable for many people. Eventually, you're going to end up deleting apps and find that the device becomes slow as the storage fills up. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max is slightly more expensive, but it comes with 16GB storage, double the available space of the standard stick.

What do you think so far?

In my experience, Fire TV sticks work best with Amazon's own apps, which means that this is great for those who use Prime Video over other streaming services. Even though the experience isn't always as good with non-Amazon apps, it's good enough for multiple binge watching sessions. I like the remote as well with its tactile buttons, which makes it easy to use it even when your room is dark.

Looking for something else? Retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, and Home Depot have Prime Day competition sales that are especially useful if you don’t have Amazon Prime.

  • Walmart’s Prime Day competition sale begins at midnight on July 8 and will include deals up to 50% off. It’s an especially good option if you have Walmart+.

  • Best Buy’s Prime Day competition sale, “Black Friday in July,” runs through Sunday, July 13 and has some of the best tech sales online. It’s an especially good option if you’re a My Best Buy “Plus” or “Total” member.

  • Home Depot extended its 4th of July sale through at least July 9, competing with some amazing deals of its own. It’s an especially good option if you’re looking for power tools, appliances, or outdoor equipment.
